A Boy Named Bran [Music]
November 2nd, 2008 by --KALEB NATION--
This was one of the hardest songs for me to write, and I very nearly threw it out completely on the first day. But I came back the next morning, rewrote the piano and added a guitar, and ended up making one of my favorite pieces.
The reason I think this song was so hard to make is because Bran’s character is so complex to me — and like many things in The Farfield Curse, his story is both happy and sad at the same time. I feel that this song helps to set him and his history to music, and fits especially well after the Prologue, when I imagine Bran would be growing up without any idea of The Farfield Curse — a time when he is just a boy named Bran, and yet is destined for great things he has yet to discover.
Listen below, and if you like it, there are more songs I’ve composed on the music page:

I like it very much, especially the pieces with the piano.
It sounds just like a movie score.
I don’t know if it suits Bran, because I haven’t read the preview chapters, but the song itself sounds really good.
Keep up the good work =P

I think it’s beautiful!

Wow Kaleb, I love it! You know Camila (comment above) is right. This does sound a lot like a movie score.
I loved the piano, fabulous job
November 2nd, 2008 at 11:17 am
Yeah, I was hoping for the movie score sound to it, especially since it uses a full orchestra. When I write, I am picturing each scene like a movie in my imagination, so the movie music just goes along with it

Hmmmm, I wonder if all writers see a movie in their head, because I know I do, and a ton of other author interviews I’ve read/watched say the same thing.
The song is just like a movie score. The sound of it, along with your description, makes me think it would fit the movie Simon Birch, also, since the main character’s story is both happy and sad.
I can’t wait to read your book =)

LOVE IT!!!!
Your music helps inspire me too!
Keep writting!

Hey Kaleb!
This is another great song, and I have to agree with the others about the movie score thing, it is only fitting that a movie on the page have music to go with it. I seriously cannot wait to read the book if it is anything like the songs.

Wow… you make beautiful music, Kaleb. I have not yet read the preview chapters, so I wouldn’t know if it fits with Bran’s character, but it is a lovely song nonetheless. c: And I would have to agree, it does sound like a movie score, which is fitting for me because I am in love with movie music!

This was amazing. And, I thought it did match Bran’s character, at least as much as we’ve seen. ANd, yeah, it sounds very movie-ish. So that’s a good thing.
I like it.
Oh, I have a question. Do you play these instruments, or does someone else? Because the other music comps that I’ve read the posts for, I didn’t entirely get it. Then again, I’m pretty blonde…

I’m not going to lie, it’s absolutely beautiful. Everything you were shooting for you hit right on the mark. It suits Bran in every possible way.
I envy your creative skill.

It’s a really gorgeous song. I’d definately buy it and listen to it. You should think about getting into writing music for movies!

I like it. I’ve read the preview and I think it goes well with Bran… it’s got a kind of self-discovery feel. The drums at the end - it makes it a bit exciting but it’s still gentle, even with the military-ish beat.

YOU WROTE THIS?!?!? oh my gosh!! this is absolutely amazing!! good job, kaleb!!
November 2nd, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Lovely! It’s so pretty, and you are so talented! I can’t really answer your question though because I can’t say I know the character.
November 2nd, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Wow. Loved it. I wish so hard that I could write music, instead of just playing it.
I think it fits well with Bran’s character, like the sad but still happy and very intriguing.
I also have to ask what I think may be a stupid question…. is there a computer program or something you use to make the music, or do you play instruments and cut them all together?
November 2nd, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Oh wow. That was amazing Kaleb! (: I loved it. It suited Bran perfectly. Sad but had happy at the same time.
Beautiful song. <3

I also think this song is way good, and i think it goes with the preview chapters REALLY well
Great job kaleb!
November 2nd, 2008 at 11:35 pm
Absolutely amazing! I love all the songs you’ve done, particularly those for your book (which I am dying to read the rest of after the first few chapters–thank you for the preview, by the way!) and I kid you not, “Bolton Road” knocks me breathless every time.

[...] enjoy my music, I just finished a new song and I’d really like your opinion on it! You can listen to it here and tell me what you [...]

This is so beautiful! Definitely a few tears from me. Great job!
November 3rd, 2008 at 1:19 am
Very nice. The word that encapsulates it for me is “wistful,” which I think fits very well with Bran–his dissatisfaction with the present, wishing but accepting…paired with the sadness that there is so much he doesn’t know.
What software are you using?

This is GREAT Kaleb. In the interest of keeping your ego grounded I shall say no more.
November 3rd, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Kaleb, I love it! Fantastic job.
November 3rd, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Great!!!!!!!!!
November 3rd, 2008 at 4:01 pm
That was beautiful. I can’t tell you if it fits with Bran because I haven’t read the preview chapters, but I am waiting until you get a definite release date and then I’m waiting until 2 months or so before the release, and then I will request them, so my waiting time is shorter. The wait is easier if I don’t know what I’m missing.
Anyway, great job! (Seriously, is there anything you can’t do?)
November 3rd, 2008 at 5:45 pm
Wow! Very poignant. I love it!
*goes to search for more Kaleb music*

It is a very pretty piece, Kaleb.
I have yet to read the preview chapters, though I have them, I am too busy. When I do, though, I will have to let you know what I really think of it relating to Bran.
Beautiful job, though, Kaleb!

It’s really good! and like Alli said, what can’t you do? I’m really begining to think you are becoming more like Edward Cullen everyday in the sense that you have many talents! I enjoyed every minute and it was good to the ears!
November 3rd, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Wow! Another amazing song! You have a wonderful knack for stirring emotions, Kaleb. I don’t know about your story or characters, but when I listened to your song, I thought it felt kind of bittersweet in the beginning and built up to a sense of overcoming adversity. I agree that it sounds like a movie score. I had a little movie playing in my head while I listened. Thank you for sharing your talent! I think I will check out that link above to your music page.

This is possibly my favorites out of all of your music. It is so beautiful!
I haven’t received the preview chapters yet (I’m guessing you are extremely busy right now), but from what you and some others have said about Bran, it seems to relate perfectly to him. I agree with what one other commenter said: that it has a wistful feel to it at the beginning, of someone learning more about who they are and struggling to accept life- sad but hopeful- self discovery maybe? And you definitely achieved the movie score sound as well.
I can’t wait to read the preview chapters. You are absurdly talented.
November 4th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
Amazing. Unfortunetly I never got the chapter previews so I don’t know if it relates to Bran, but I can say it was completely awesome. I love how all of the soundtrack peices sound similar but very different at the same time. Love it love it
November 4th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
I loved it! All your music is amazing! Will I be able to buy it when the book is out? I love the two songs that our allowed to be downloaded and listen to them all the time. But my favorite is the Theme to Bolton Road and I always wish I could have it on my ipod!!! Anyway, awesome job! =]
November 4th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Wow, that was really beautiful! Nice job Kaleb!!
November 5th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Fascinating, though my impression of Bran (in those first few pages) was that he was a bit clueless (like all heroes at the beginning) and the music sounded more confident. Obviously Bran changes eventually. The music sounded like hopeful promise, more to come, don’t give up. That sort of thing.
GREAT JOB!!
My thoughts: I don’t see my stories as movies. I see them as they happen, which is harder I suppose, because I have to mentally cut out unnecessary eating and sleeping scenes that other authors perhaps don’t have to bother with.
November 6th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
It fits Bran well. Another great song, Kaleb.
November 8th, 2008 at 5:19 am
This song is the greatest I have ever heard!! It made me cry, thinking at my own novel, which ends very sadly, with a little bit of hope of a better future, a better life…
Thank you for sharing this song with us! You rock, Kaleb!
November 11th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
I love it!!! I wish my music could be that “finished” I get songs written in my head and I can play them on the piano but what program do you use? I need to get it.
Alice
PS could you send me the preview chapters?
November 12th, 2008 at 12:43 am
This goes incredibly well with Bran’s character(from what I’ve read).
This is amazing, and I can’t wait until we can download/buy the soundtrack!

It sounds sweet. From the music it souns like Bran is lonely, and shy but also kind, smart, brave, friendly. Farther through the music starts getting more fast and loud with more drums, sort of like when some one is dreaming of a better life and that he is special no matter what people say, but than at the end it starts slowing dwn like he’s remembering what position he’s in and that it could take a miricle to change things and…….yeah. I got all of that from the music and I haven’t read any of the book. If what I gather form the music about Bran’s character is true than that’s cool. I can’t wait to read the book!

This song is beautiful.
And I think it fits Bren perfectly =)
