Review

Rating: 8

I originally found this book in a random, small bookstore in Bastrop, Texas, and read as much as I could before we had to leave (I don’t remember my excuse for not buying it, but it had to have been a pressing reason). The beginning was so enthralling that years later, I still remembered it, and would talk about how good the book was when in fact I had never finished it.

I finally bought it years later, starting again at the beginning. It was still as wonderfully written as I had remembered. The writing style was very flowing and humorous, and the sycophants pretty much represent a dream creature.

However, as I got toward the last third of the book, things soured slightly. It seemed to me that with such a wonderful beginning, the story would continue in a similar voice but on to newer and more interesting situations. Instead, I felt as if the action became drawn out with nothing new happening. The ending was thus a bit abrupt.

Still, I honestly enjoyed the majority of this novel, and especially the voice of Obert Skye: a mix of Lemony Snicket and James Dashner at times. He is definitely an author I will be reading more from in the future.
