Writing In Seasons

150 150 Kaleb Nation

I was interviewed by Chris Trondsen at Erika Tascon’s Birthday Bash last month! Watch it if you want to see me incredibly hyped up on too much caffeine and if you want to meet my new friend The Little Hair That Would Not Stay In Place

Among other things, I explain how I write in “seasons” around 2:56. I point it out because my seasonal writing goes against everything in those library books about how to “be a writer” —

“REAL writers write EVERY day and once they finish a book REAL authors IMMEDIATELY start writing on the NEXT one so they are ALWAYS writing like REAL writers…”from The Only Real Way To Be An Author by Huckster Notawriter

It makes sense in theory on paper (pun was required). If you work out every day, you’ll get stronger. If you write every day, you’ll write better. But they fail to mention that some writers aren’t the norm.

Most writers are rabbits.

They can bounce from one project to the next, finishing a book in their children’s series then another in their adult series just in time to release a racy e-novella under their fourth pen name. They hop around with their semi-robotic routines, their superhuman discipline, their ability to crank out thriller after thriller and never run out of steam or have the slightest dip in quality.

These writers annoy me. No amount of energy drinks can help me keep up with their spirit-crushingly spectacular pace.

Other writers are bears.

Sometimes plotting and writing and editing and polishing an entire novel is such a mental exercise that your muse simply needs to rest. For a LONG time.

My muse needs 6 months of hibernation for every 6 months of writing activity. Like clockwork, my mind switches to creative mode at 5PM PT, which is why you’ll often see me posting word count updates to Twitter at 3 in the morning.

If I push myself to write in the off-season or at different hours, everything comes out wrong and falls apart into a frustrating mess. My muse just isn’t awake.

I’ve learned to work with it. Half of the year, I’m online: making videos, websites, shows, projects, everything from that side of my life. Then the writing seasons creeps up on me. Before I even realize what’s happening, I’m suddenly writing in a frenzy again.

Keep writing, but keep loving writing too.

I’ve learned to not be afraid of doing things my way. If you have school or a job or commitments and can only write on Wednesdays after 7PM, don’t feel like you’re any less of a writer than someone who never pries themselves from their pens-and-microwavable-food-covered desk. If you scheduled writing time for every day at noon but find yourself uninterested and uninspired, relax. Do something else. Take notes for tomorrow so you feel better. Writing doesn’t expire. Often letting an idea simmer for the night will deepen its flavor it the morning.

Now that I’ve finished this alarmingly lengthy blog post, I just realized something… I think writing season is about to start again.

VIP At The VMAs!

Taco Bell invited me to the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards and surprised me with the VIP treatment! Watch the story of my trip:

In case you missed it, here’s my blog about how Taco Bell asked me to the VMAs!

Make sure you’re following me @KalebNation to keep up with my adventures!

I’m Going To The VMAs

It’s official… I’m going to the MTV VMA’s for Taco Bell!

Kaleb Nation with Taco Bell's Fiery DLT.

I’ve had such a ridiculously hard time keeping this secret. Every year, Taco Bell chooses Youtube Correspondents to visit the MTV Video Music Awards in New York and be their official eyes and ears online. This year they picked me!

I’ll see it all. Taco Bell is bringing me into the preparty, the prepreparty, the VMA’s, and even the afterparty (and maybe an afterafterparty?). I’ll be tweeting, Instagramming, and vlogging my trip from California to New York and back!

Follow the story at @KalebNation or on the new LIVE page!

Last year, the legendary Tyler Oakley was their ambassador. Since then I’ve dreamed of being chosen but figured it’d take me a few more years.

Then I got a text message.

From Taco Bell.

Asking ME.

taco-bell-text

There were too many OMG’s in my reply text to show it without risking my reputation as an author.

I’m very excited to be a part! My live tweets begin Saturday August 24. Get ready for a big Internet party!

But Kaleb, How Did Taco Bell Notice You?

IMG_54102

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably noticed a quickly-developing romance between me and Taco Bell. I’m obsessed with their tweets: anti-corporate, friendly and welcoming, quick wit dashed with sweet sarcasm. It’s not like talking to a restaurant — more like talking to your awesome cousin who just happens to have 700,000 fans.

Fast forward a few months of tweets. Taco Bell invited me to join their challenge for Youtubers to write, produce, and edit short videos announcing their new Fiery Doritos Locos Tacos… all in only 24 hours. With 10 minutes to spare, I narrowly managed to get my commercial in by the deadline:

Can you tell that I rewrote the script 4 times? Or that technical difficulties forced me to film everything a few hours before deadline? Apparently it turned out okay because Taco Bell put my video on the front page of Mashable!

kaleb-nation-mashable

I’ve already had Fiery DLT’s twice this week… and the video challenge is over! I hope they have a bunch at the VMA’s 😀

One Year

My girlfriend Taylor and I have officially been dating for one year. From being deep in each other’s friend zones, to taking a chance at Vidcon, to our Ke$ha-inspired first date, to a long long-distance relationship, to living in the same building in Hollywood… the past year has been my favorite. And in a few weeks, we’ll be going back to Vidcon 2013, where it all started.

Of course we used this as a reason for a mini photo shoot. Enjoy!

The 60SR And PMC: Fandom News Gets Its Show

600 600 Kaleb Nation

I’m so excited to announce some news that I’ve had to keep secret for far too long. To summarize: I’ve signed a deal that partners my 60SR show with the major media company PMC, and I’ll now be producing the show full time.

The 60SR has been my project for almost two years now. The show is 60 Seconds of Recaps, Reviews and Rants about the latest in fandom news. It’s been my most successful series to date: partially because it covers exactly what fans want most, and partially because I absolutely love producing them. Since 2008, covering fandom news has kinda been my thing.

You might not have heard the name PMC before but I’m 99% sure you’ve come across something they’ve created. PMC is a world leader in digital media with a portfolio of properties like TVline, Nikki Finke’s Deadline, Hollywood Life, Movieline, and many others, as well as major events like the Young Hollywood Awards, The Style Awards, and the Breakthrough Of The Year Awards. Their websites are seen by millions worldwide and their videos air daily on ION TV.

They recently ventured into YouTube with their YouTube Original’s channel ENTV. When I met with PMC, we were discussing ideas about a show for dedicated fans of things like The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, One Direction, Twilight, Justin Bieber, etc. As we went over ideas, I realized what they were looking for… was exactly what I was already doing on my 60SR show!

So we made an offer to produce my show under their company. They said yes!

Everything you like about the 60SR won’t change. I’ll continue to host and produce the show on Youtube.com/60SR. But with the new support of PMC’s team, the 60SR will be able to bring you even more breaking fandom news, more of my crazy commentary, and even more access to the most buzzed-about Hollywood events — with new episodes 5 days a week, Monday – Friday.

I’m so excited about this opportunity and know that you will love the show. I’ll see you on the next episode!

My Night At The Breaking Dawn Movie Premiere

150 150 Kaleb Nation

Stephenie Meyer and Me

Earlier this week, I was invited to be on the red carpet of the Breaking Dawn movie premiere in Los Angeles. It’s impossible to put into words how thrilling (and caffeine-filled) my night was while spending time in one of the biggest film franchises in the world.

For those few who don’t know, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn is one of the most anticipated films of the year. As the first of the two-part final installment in the $2.5-ish billion franchise, the fans know they’re up to their final chance to be a part of the phenomenon. Over 600 people camped out for 5 days, braving the cold and rain in the hopes that they’d be placed near the red carpet when the event finally started, to see their favorite film stars as they would arrive.

A film premiere is a little different on the other side of the barricades. When you’re there as press, you are there for the stars too, but you have a job. Your purpose is to CAPTURE them, to find ways to take the stars from the carpet and send them to their fans all over the world with photos and videos and as many tweets as you can possibly type while simultaneously holding microphones, cameras, lenses and your notes. As press, your job is to be the eyes and ears of the millions of fans who could not be on the red carpet with you. They need your interviews like food.

I remember the moment the limos and sedans started to pull up, and you could hear the shouts of the crowds that lined the streets, people held back by walls and bodyguards. You can really tell who is getting out of the car based on the decibel level of the crowd noise.

The Source Of The Screams

The door will crack open, people will shout, quickly silence — it’s just a Kardashian. The doors of another will part, people will scream for twenty seconds — it’s Peter Facinelli. Like the Pope, the star will sometimes spread his arms open to the crowd, and the shouts will continue dutifully until his hands are finally lowered.

It’s easy to think that’s the loudest it gets when star after star arrives to similar receiving sounds. Jennifer Love Hewitt. Cody Simpson. Some guy who was famous in the 80’s that you can’t remember the name of.

But then Taylor Lautner appears. Oh the screaming. The screaming. The SCREAMING. Imagine a wall of screams and running straight in to that wall. It is like the roar of a high-pitched tsunami sweeping over a city of eagles.

The Target Of The Screams

Then the crowd is really going, the shutters on the cameras are snapping, the press people are calling for attention. Then the premiere has really started. Then you really feel like you’re in the middle of one of the biggest Hollywood events of the year.

Because honestly, there are few things more exhilarating than film premieres where actual honest-to-goodness famous people show up. Red-carpet-goers are constantly surrounded by hoards of publicists who (for reasons that fly entirely over my head) do everything in their power to block their entrusted stars from any and all possible publicity generators (AKA, me). It’s almost a game to get stars’ attention, to convince them to step over and answer YOUR question. You lean over the metal fencing and shout in hopes you’ll get an answer. Sometimes the loudest wins. It’s worth the work: thirty seconds with Kristen Stewart is about 2 million views.

I had a wonderful night with the people of the Twilight franchise.  The producers of KALEB’S NATION were also there and we got to spend time together at the afterparty. I sat in the theater a few rows from the lead star of the film, five seats from a Kardashian, one row back from the producer. I saw many of the friends I only see once a year at these events. And I slept very well that night when the caffeine crash finally hit.

See you next year, Twilight fans. — KALEB
