ARC’s For Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse!

150 150 Kaleb Nation

As you can see, the Advance Reader Copies of BRAN HAMBRIC: THE FARFIELD CURSE have finally arrived! Here’s video of me opening the box from my publishers and going a bit nutty when I hold my book for the first time 😀

This moment was truly one of the biggest in my life: getting to hold this book was somewhat symbolic of six years of work on this story and the characters. Of course I’m thrilled to finally be able to see it in print: and very soon, it will be in bookstores all across the country (in hardcover, of course!).

These ARCs and those my publisher still have will now be sent out to key media people and reviewers who will help to promote the book before it comes out. There will also be many ARCs available at Book Expo America coming up at the end of next week, where I will have my first book signing! I’ll make sure there’s plenty of video of that for those of you who can’t make it 😀

If you’d like, you can download the first five chapters of the book completely free at BranHambric.com, as well as pre-order it from nearly any bookstore!

Nicoleface And The Relay For Life

At the Twilight premiere

My friend, who everyone knows as Nicoleface in the TwilightGuy chat, is doing a relay in honor of her mother who is battling cancer. She is one of the mods for my chatroom and my BlogTV shows, and she has a goal of $100. She is heading out for the relay today, and I think it would be wonderful if the Twitter and blog world helped her beat that goal!

I know we can get her past $100 by this evening. She’s at $50 now, which means we only need 25 people to donate $2 each for her to reach the goal, or 10 people to donate $5. If you would like to donate to her wonderful cause, please head on over to this page.

Oh, and one person who donates any amount and leaves a comment below (don’t post you donation amount or address) will get the first signed Bran Hambric postcard ever printed. If you didn’t already have enough incentive, there’s something for you 😀

These things are ginormous. It's nearly the size of a book jacket.

Kim Harrison and Kaza Kingsley Are BranFans

The first blurbs for BRAN HAMBRIC: THE FARFIELD CURSE have finally arrived! Blurbs, for those not familiar with the book business, are those prized and coveted reviews from Very Important People, especially reviewers and famous authors, that a writer receives about his or her book. These usually appear on the back of the book jacket.

Being a writer who has had a seemingly endless supply of good luck and an eternally wonderful agent and publisher, my first blurbs come straight from the bestsellers: KIM HARRISON and KAZA KINGSLEY.

kim-harrisonKim Harrison, bestselling author of The Hollows Series (with Dead Witch Walking), co-contributor to Stephenie Meyer and others on Prom Nights From Hell, and whose upcoming book Once Dead, Twice Shy is currently in my reading pile of ARCs, wrote:

Innocence gives way to danger as Bran pieces together his deadly past before his legacy can rise up to kill him in turn. With characters both silly and serious, Kaleb Nation has crafted a world vastly different from our own where magic sits next to cell phones, and gnomes really do travel. Reminiscent of Harry Potter, Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse is everything a young adult read should be.

Author of Once Dead, Twice Shy

kaza-kingsleyKaza Kingsley, bestselling author of the Erec Rex series (with Erec Rex: The Dragon’s Eye) whose latest book Erec Rex: The Search For Truth comes out in a mere 49 days, wrote:

Whimsy, magic, and suspense collide together in this breathtaking tale. The Farfield Curse is a story you’ll want to pick up, but not put down!

Kaza Kingsley
Author of the Bestselling Erec Rex series

I couldn’t be happier with our first blurbs and reviews of the book! They will soon be up on the pre-orders page and on the Bran Hambric site as well. There will be many more of these to come before the release on 9-9-09 (and perhaps a few… surprise… blurb-ers in the next month or so 😀 ). I’ll be posting them as they come in!

Also, funny how my first two blurbs came in from authors whose names also begin with the letter K. Coincidence? Or FATE.

Bella Rocks! Writes Song Inspired By Bran Hambric

150 150 Kaleb Nation

Here’s something an awesome BranFan just uploaded to YouTube! Bella Rocks!, a Twilight-inspired band, has released a brand-new song — but this time, it is inspired by my own book, Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse:

branfans-logo-smallThis is just another example of how wonderful the Twilight fandom has been to me, when barely over a year ago I was a complete outsider who knew nothing about the books! Words just cannot express how it feels to see someone so inspired by my writing that they create works of their own based on it. Even more so, as the book isn’t even OUT yet for another FOUR months, the song is based entirely on what happens in the first four preview chapters! Please go send some love Katie’s way and check out her awesome Twilight music.

Katie will be appearing at Summer School In Forks on June 25 – 28 (I will also be there to deliver my Keynote Address). Be sure to check out the event if you want to see her live!

QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS: What do you think of Katie’s song (if you’ve read the preview, do you think it fits well with the prologue?). Also, what should we call this genre of music: gnome rock? A Bran Band? 😀

Come See Me at Book Expo America

150 150 Kaleb Nation

Kaleb Nation at BEA 2009WHERE: NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, USA

WHEN: FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2009

My publishers have announced that they will be bringing me to Book Expo America this year, which is the largest annual book trade event in the US. It will be my first appearance as a writer, and my debut into the professional literary world. My publishers will be showcasing Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse in their booth (currently #3977) to countless booksellers, librarians, teachers and publishing insiders who will be attending. Excitement? MUCH.

For those of you who might be wary of approaching the Sourcebooks booth, I’m told there will be a collection of Advance Reader Copies of my book sitting out that are Completely Free Of Charge. Yes. Free books. For the taking. BEFORE 9/9/09.

I haven’t actually been told how many books will be available, so if you’re one of those people who happen to be in the book business, and absolutely, positively NEED a copy of Bran Hambric NOW or you’ll lament in sackcloth and ashes, then please come see us at your earliest possible convenience. I plan to wear a very large coat, which will end up with a bit more stuffing than when I came in, and multiple ARC’s having mysteriously disappeared from the Sourcebooks booth. Shhh. Don’t rat me out.

Since there will be ARC’s, which are basically paperback versions of my book, I will also have my very first book signing on Friday, May 29, at 11:00 AM! If you are at the event, or are interested in registering, I really hope you will stop by. Of course, I’ll have plenty of photos and YouTube videos from the event, too.

(For those who are wondering just how big this event is, check out this video). (ADDED: here’s a video:)

Pre-orders for ‘The Farfield Curse’ Have Officially Begun

150 150 Kaleb Nation

People. Seriously. You are too good to me.

I don’t know what kind soul was linking to the Amazon listing, but I’m told it went all the way past #5000, which is unheardof for an unknown, gnat-sized writer such as myself. Most of my friends tell me they started out in the 1 millions. This is entirely thanks to you devoted people who actually found it and started ordering before I even had the chance to pass it around! So thank you for kicking this off so perfectly — it gives me the confidence I really need as we get into the hard work of promoting it 🙂

If you’d like to pre-order, head on over to BranHambric.com/buy (Borders, B&N and others will be forthcoming as soon as they have it on their sites). As I said in the video, how can you possibly buy a book without sampling it first? So check out the preview chapters if you haven’t already. And, my sincere thanks to everyone who invests in my dreams early on 🙂

Bran Hambric Preorders Have Opened EARLY

150 150 Kaleb Nation

I am away from my computer with all my files, and the internet here is super slow: but, I’ve been informed that PREORDERS FOR BRAN HAMBRIC: THE FARFIELD CURSE have officially OPENED A MONTH EARLY on Amazon.com! If my great usage of CAPS hasn’t yet convinced you, I will say this is super exciting and means that finally, my book is actually on sale:

Links on BN and Borders will be coming very soon, I’m told (as well as a better post, when I’m home). But for now, I’ve been cleared to tell everyone about the Amazon.com link! Enjoy 😀

NOTE: I told people on my BlogTV show yesterday not to order the book until May 9, but my publishers told me today you can order it ANYTIME.

The Cover for Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse

150 150 Kaleb Nation

book-image

I am very pleased to present to you the cover for my debut novel BRAN HAMBRIC: THE FARFIELD CURSE, due in stores on 9-9-09.

What can I say? I got my dream illustrator, my dream color design and my dream layout. Everything in this cover is exactly as I hoped it would be, straight from the imagination of our glorious artist Brandon Dorman, with a whole lot of hard work from my publishers and agent to get it perfect.

Check out the entirely new website at BranHambric.com! Giving away of secrets: if you click on the tiny moon next to the links on the front page, there is a special section for Branfans 😀 . Here is a book trailer I worked on for while, which you might enjoy too:

It is quite hard to see the tiniest details of this cover when it is a small image on a website, so today (Saturday, April 18) I will be doing a LIVE BlogTV show on my channel. I don’t exactly know what time (I’ll post it on my Twitter when I do) but it is advisable to get there early. As my shows go, there can be anywhere from 300+ people crammed in, and while everyone can watch, only the first 150 can actually talk to me and ask questions. Hope to see you there!

A Bran Hambric Soundtrack?

150 150 Kaleb Nation

Yesterday, I was cleaning up my computer and found an old song concept from months ago that I never finished. I had been having loads of trouble with a piano line in the song and had finally just given up. When I found it again, I realized the problem with the piano was that the piano just didn’t belong — I took it out, and suddenly the song came together.

A few hours of not-studying-psychology later, I might actually have another song to add to the Bran Hambric soundtrack (I promise I’ll release Astara soon, I’m almost done mastering it). If I decide it’s worth finishing, I’m thinking this new one will be for Shambles (he’s in the preview chapters if you’ve read them). Here’s a clip from the middle:

[audio:http://kalebnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/shambles-clip.mp3|rightbg=0x5b5ea4]

For this one I’m going for a very emotional, brooding sound that’s different from the rest of the soundtrack: this overall feeling of a mentally alone and tortured creature who can’t escape the voices that haunt him from within.

Speaking of the soundtrack, I’ve noticed that there are quite a number of people who want a Bran Hambric soundtrack on CD. A day ago, I posted on Twitter that I was considering it, and within 5 minutes I was inundated with replies from all over the world wanting to get it somehow. (In the midst of showing a spoof of the CD art, I might have inadvertently leaked what we might be using as the Bran Hambric logo…see what unexpected insider information you get from following my Twitter?).

My original idea for the soundtrack was to give the songs away with the book somehow, but it appears that at least with the first edition of THE FARFIELD CURSE, there will be no CD attached. Sometimes, for books that sell particularly well, there will be deluxe editions with extra material, which is the most likely point when a CD would actually come with the book; but as of now, the only way I will be able to get CD’s to the people who want them is to sell it really cheap from a Print On Demand service (most likely LuLu.com). Nothing is set in stone, but my thoughts on this plan are:

–  A CD of the soundtrack with 9-10 songs available from BranHambricMusic.com for really cheap ($8 or $9),
–  Half of the soundtrack available for free download, as before with Youtube,
–  A code inside THE FARFIELD CURSE book that unlocks bonus songs and downloads that aren’t on the soundtrack.

Since Twitter isn’t really a good place to see a show of hands on who likes the idea and who doesn’t, please do comment on this below. Your feedback on this will really be the deciding factor on if a Bran Hambric CD actually does come into being, because at the moment I’m indecisive.

By the way, I’m testing out a new and improved commenting system on my blog. Now, you can reply directly to others comments, and see my replies to you all in one place! Hopefully you all enjoy it 😀
